BIOGRAPHY
Brayan Ruiz approaches the repertoire of the Colombian Andean bandola from a global perspective. His work as a bandola player spans chamber music from Colombia and Latin America, as well as repertoire for solo bandola. He is currently pursuing a Master in Global Musics at Codarts University of the Arts in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, supported by the Codarts Talent Grant, ICETEX Jóvenes Talentos and COLFUTURO.
Throughout his career he has performed with and led his own independent projects, Plenilunio Trío and the duo Brayan Ruiz & David Valencia. He has worked as a bandola player with the Filarmónica de Música Colombiana of the Orquesta Filarmónica de Bogotá (2020–2026) and appeared as a soloist with the Sinfónica Nacional de Colombia (2021). He has also been a “Joven Intérprete” and a member of traditional and Latin American music ensembles of the Music Department of the Banco de la República de Colombia (2022–2026), and section leader of the Estudiantina del Eje Cafetero, one of Colombia’s Estudiantinas Regionales (2023). This work has taken him to the country’s leading stages, including the Teatro Colón, Teatro Mayor Julio Mario Santo Domingo, Teatro Colsubsidio, the Luis Ángel Arango Library Concert Hall and Sala Beethoven in Cali.
In December 2024 he recorded his first album, Lunios, with Plenilunio Trío: nine original arrangements of Colombian Andean and Latin American music. With the trio he has received major awards, including the Gran Premio Mono Núñez Instrumental (2024), the Premio Diego Estrada for best bandola player at the Festival Mono Núñez (2024), and first prize in the instrumental category of the Festival de Música Andina y Llanera Colombiana Hatoviejo Cotrafa (2023).
With the Banco de la República he has given twenty concerts between 2022 and 2026, ten as a bandola soloist, nine with Plenilunio Trío and one with the duo Brayan Ruiz & David Valencia, touring the bank’s cultural centres across Colombia.
His plans for 2026–2027 include completing an album with the duo Brayan Ruiz & David Valencia: eleven works in original arrangements, a journey through Latin American music for bandola and guitar.
